What this calculation assumes
Expenses stay constant and savings cover the full expense budget. There is no income, interest or inflation in this scenario. The example target is editable and is not a recommendation.
The formula
Target reserve = essential monthly expenses × chosen months. Coverage = available savings ÷ essential monthly expenses. Gap = max(0, target − savings).
Available savings means money you have chosen to make available for emergencies, not a credit limit or a volatile asset valuation.
Timing and rounding
Add every expense once. Include recurring debt minimums, insurance or healthcare in Other essentials if they apply. Annual essential bills can be divided by 12, but a large bill due soon may require a separate cash buffer.
Where the model stops
This is an expense-coverage estimate, not a recommendation for how much you personally need. It does not model insurance deductibles, unpredictable emergencies, benefit payments or changing household needs.
Questions about this tool
Why can I choose the number of months?
The appropriate buffer depends on your situation. This tool shows the arithmetic for a target you select; it does not assign a universal target.
Why is a zero expense budget rejected?
Coverage would require division by zero and would not describe a meaningful budget. Enter at least one essential expense.
